Thank you for your comment. I had to read the post again, since I wrote it several years ago. The post was not about the death penalty, nor did it express an opinion about Williams' guilt. It was a about the choices editors made in covering the story. My description of the victims of the murders was based on press accounts. No disrespect was intended. At the time that I was writing this blog, my interest was in the framing of public discourse, for the most part. I also covered did some original reporting. But I rarely used this blog as a personal political platform.

Who cares what he did in prison, good or bad? None of it is relevant to the fact that he killed 4 people in a cruel, cold manner. He was an obvious sociopath who ENJOYED killing those people.
He made 27 yr old store clerk Owens lay face down, chambered ONE round then shot the security monitor; repeated this twice but shot the man each time. When accomplie Sims asked why Tookie shot Owens, he said he "didn't want to leave any witnesses" and also, he killed Owens "because he was white and he was killing all white people."
Later that day, Williams bragged to his brother about killing Owens, saying "you should have heard the way he sounded when I shot him." Williams then made gurgling or growling noises & laughed hysterically.

I ALSO TAKE EXCEPTION OF YOU DESCRIPTION OF THE FINAL 3 VICTIMS AS MOTEL EMPLOYEES - Those 3 people were A FAMILY; the Wangs, a 76 yr old father, 63 yr old mother, & their daughter. They lived there & were killed in their living quarters (aka HOME)That is exactly the kind of BIASED reporting I see in these 'defense of a killer' articles.

POLICE entered, saw 76 yr old Yen-I Yang lying on a sofa "soaked with blood,gasping for air,& making gurgling noises." 2 blasts striking left arm & abdomen-shredded his left arm, fractured his ribs, & shattered his spleen, right kidney, bowel & large vessels. 2nd wound was to the lower left chest. This wound struck exactly the same areas. The wadding from the shell & plastic casing were at the base of his liver. THIS MAN SURVIVED FOR TWO HOURS!

63 yro mom Tsai-Shai Yang was making "gurgling noises & gasping for air," with "her knees drawn up under her, and her face down on the floor". She was shot once in the gut, then again directly into her coccyx (or tailbone) from a just a few inches away, the wadding & plastic case were in her skin.
Lastly, the deputies found daughter Yee-Chen Lin lying on the hallway floor.
Yee-Chen Lin was shot once in the upper left face area at a distance of a few feet. Despite the truly horrific nature of the wound inflicted upon her, she clung to life. Transported from the scene to Hospital, but died at 7:36AM (almost 3 hours later)

He threatened to kill the jurors at his trial, made plans to escape from prison that included blowing up the prison bus with all people on board so the police could not determine immediately who escaped; Called no mitigation witnesses during the penalty phase of the trial-even though the judge stressed that he should.

He told his roommate & roommates wife that he 'shot those buddhaheads' & stated that during any future robberies he would "blow them away just like I blew them buddhaheads away on Vermont".

He also told the roommate that "blackie" (Alfred Coward an accomplice to the first murder) was a "punk" because he couldn't eat after the murder; & that he might have to kill him.
IF YOU ARE AGAINST THE DEATH PENALTY, YOU OUGHT TO USE A MORE SYMPATHETIC EXAMPLE. I don't know why blacks protested his death, he was nothing but a stone cold killer.

If you mean where did I get Du Bois' notes from, I copied them from microfilms of his papers in Princeton University's library. If you are asking about his sources, they are referred to in the notes -a letter from George Washington, a poem by Phillip Freneau, etc.

As a child who grew up in Lambrook part of the time in the '50s, (grade school in Elaine) moved away then came back to Helena in the '70s, this is all news to me! My father bought land in Lambrook right after WW2. As a little fellow, I remember an old school in Lambrook that had been turned into a blacksmith shop, an old abandoned boarding house, an ice house, 3 stores and 2 cotton gins. My grandparents moved to Lambrook from Mississippi to run the farm while my dad made a career of the Navy.
As a little white kid that did most of my growing up on Navy bases, it struck me as strange that the black people in the area wouldn't come into our house when invited, wouldn't look at us when we talked to them, and seemed afraid of all white adults.
Now it makes an awful kind of sense! Thanks for opening the eyes of a 65 year old man to this shameful (and ignored!)chapter of our history!

The person who shot the video deleted it from youtube, and said he doesn't have it anymore. I was heartbroken, because the performance that it recorded was a very happy family occasion. The next week, my mother, who had been to ill to attend, died.

What does honestly puzzle me is how come the media is ducking and dodging this story..this is a real person with real and viable issues of discrimination, and she seems to be doing her best in an honest, decent, and AMERICAN way to be heard and understood. I happened to come back to this post while looking for something else and wondered whatever happened in these two cases. According to this March, 2008 news story, Sweat admitted to attacking the two victims and was sentenced to 110 years in prison. That story reported that the other defendant, Dustin Evans, was awaiting trial on kidnapping charges. I did not find any further information on the disposition of his case. However, Ladelle McWhorter includes this case in her scholarly consideration of the history of racial and sexual oppression in America.

I was friends with Sandra in College as well as I testified at the trail. I don't think it was fair for Joshua to get off the way he did. His actions was just as wrong as Emmanuels. They both acted like animals and should both be punish for their actions. Who gives either one of them the right to take someone's life or to just toss her body like she's not even a human being? I hope they both get what they deserve in life. I hope they both burn in hell!
