An expert pathologist announced today that a boy the death of Martin Lee Anderson, 14, at a Florida boot camp in January of this year was the result of a beating administered by guards there.Anyone who has seen the surveillance videotape of the beating of Anderson can be excused for being skeptical about State of Florida's determination that his death was not the result of trauma.
Anderson was sent to the Bay County Sherriff's Office Boot Camp on Jan. 5, 2006. A judge had remanded him to the facility the day before for joyriding in his grandmother's car. He was pushed against a pole, beaten and kicked after he collapsed during an exercise session. The camp's nurse stood by and watched the beating, periodically checking him with a stethoscope. After two hours, he was taken to a local hospital, then medi-vacced to another hospital in Pensacola. He died the next day.
An initial autopsy by Dr. Charles Siebert blamed Anderson's death on sickle-cell trait -- a condition not known to cause serious health problems. As Joy-Anne Reid notes Seibert has been criticized in the past for performing notoriously inaccurate autopsies -- including a case in which he made notes about the prostate and testicles on the body of a woman. She also point to this story reporting that the nurse, Kristin Schmidt was fined in 1993 by the state nursing board for unspecified reasons.
For Anderson's mother, Gina Jones, the story isn't over:
"I'm just glad the truth is out. But I already knew what the truth was. Now that the truth is out, and I want justice. I want the guards and the nurse to be arrested."
No arrests have been made, but the camp has been closed, and a federal civil rights investigation has been opened.

There are some things that touch you so deeply that it is impossible to find the words to express how you feel. That was the case with the video of the murder of young, Martin Lee Anderson. As a parent and a grandparent of several young men I was pained and horrified by what I saw on the video and I can only imagine the unspeakable pain that Martin's mom and dad must feel everyday.
As if watching their son's murder was not tragic enough, his parents have been forced to endure their pain without even the faintest semblance of justice.
How is it that nearly 4 months after Martin's murder by saddistic degenerates at the Boot Camp that there has not been even one arrest? Yes, I meant to call them saddistic degenerates. I can't think of any other adjectives to describe people who are capable of committing cold, blooded murder of a semi-conscious child in plain view of other vulnerable, frightened children.
How can Florida state officials justify the expenditure of taxpayer monies for a so-called investigation into Martin's death in light of the undeniable facts revealed in the video?
And how much longer will Martin's family be dragged through the mud by Gov. Bush and other Florida officials because of their continual denial of justice? It is as though his family has been emotionally raped and the whole nation has watched as their dignity has been gradually stripped from them by public officials who are intent on denying them due process and justice.

Come on people! It's a wake up call for every white, black or yellow teenager out there who is contemplating committing a crime. This I believe had to happen and yet sorry it did. I wish more teens who have criminal tendencies would be shown first hand, up front and personal, what will happen to you in prison. My heart goes out to every family who has had their daughter or son killed by police or criminals. But really, if a few more kids died in boot camps, perhaps more would choose a different path in life.
I applaud the law enforcement officers who dealt the punishment. I condemn the nurse for not doing her job however and guys and gals.......don't keep a camera around in the future when teaching discipline, alright?
To "anonymous" who applauds the officers who "dealt the punishment" of death in the Florida boot camp: first, learn to speak English properly and perhaps someone might actually be able to understand what you are saying.
Second, what you meant to say reflects your level of intelligence, which is null. As far as wishing, someone reading your comments might sincerely wish that you and your family will experience, first hand, the wrath of a criminal who has experienced one of these camps and not benefited from the program. Such a person might believe that perhaps if you were savagely raped and tortured, not just killed, by someone who is familiar with the experience and has become hardened from it, more people like you would further demonstrate your weakness through committing suicide. Afterall, according to your "logic", the appropriate punishment for disrespect, which you are clearly guilty of, is death. Perhaps if more idiots were killed, perhaps more would choose to remain silent in life.
I, however, hope that your applause for the officers serves to raise awareness about the pathetically impotent character of people who support their tactics. Finally, I hope it is all caught on camera, as I have no doubt that your physical appearance will be commensurate with your intellect, just as expected.
I pray to God (yes I'm a true believer) that justice is served. I wish people would stop defining justice by what a person looks like. The less caucasian you look should not make it okay for your rights to ever be violated. I hope for the day when justice and preconceived notions are truely blind. When a person can be judged on their character. There are some characters in all people (rich, poor, any ethnicity). We need to get back to loving each other and following the Golden Rule. Until then we can never heal our youth. We must first heal ourselves. If you really want to solve crime, give trouble teens job training, jobs, leadership training, and LOTS OF LOVE!!!!!!!!!
